Artistic Style
Jankevics belonged to the generation of Latvian painters who developed their creative practice in the post-war period following the Second World War. His oeuvre continued the Latvian realist tradition, in which landscape and nature occupied a central place. Throughout his creative career, the artist remained faithful to figurative painting, producing clearly recognisable, carefully composed works. His artistic style is characterised by decoratively generalised forms, organised into clear silhouettes and subordinated to the compositional rhythm. Colour plays an essential role in Jankevics painting. His palette is built upon rich yet mutually harmonised colour contrasts, employed in the service of mood and emotional atmosphere. Also characteristic is a confident, free and painterly brushstroke – energetic, yet at the same time preserving clarity and legibility of form.
