Vitolds Kačerovskis

Biography

Latvian artist Vitolds Kačerovskis was born on October 17, 1926, in Rīga, into the family of a professional builder (father) and a painter (mother). He received his early education at the French Lycée, where he studied from 1933 to 1941, after which he and his family were deported to Western Siberia. He returned to Latvia in 1947 and initially pursued studies in construction. In 1962, he enrolled at the Art Academy of Latvia and in 1967 graduated from the painting department under Latvian marine painter Eduards Kalniņš (1904–1988).
The artist died in 1995.[1]

Artistic style

Kačerovskis was regarded as one of the most productive artists of his generation. After graduating, he actively organized his own exhibitions, which were held throughout Latvia. His main medium was oil painting, and he demonstrated his talent in almost all genres. He created figurative compositions, portraits, still-lifes, and landscapes. Kačerovskis’ work is distinguished not only by its thematic variety but also by its ongoing stylistic and artistic exploration. The artist’s creative career developed from simplified, narrative scenes of everyday life to works reflecting existential inquiries into the inner and outer essence of the human being. In the final years of his life, he increasingly returned to the landscape genre, trying to capture the beauty and harmony of nature.[2]

Interesting Facts

Following in his father’s footsteps, Kačerovskis initially chose a career in construction and engineering. After returning from Siberian exile, he enrolled at the Riga Building College, graduating in 1950, and then continued his studies at the Faculty of Engineering and Construction of the University of Latvia, where he studied from 1951 to 1957.[3]
