Marc Chagall's "The Bible" will be on display at the Art Platz Gallery from September 17 to October 20, 2025. This unique event allows visitors to explore Chagall's series of biblical illustrations and drawings. The exhibition offers the opportunity to connect Biblical stories with contemporary spiritual and cultural values through the artist's perspective.
"From an early age, I have been fascinated by the Bible. It always seemed to me the greatest source of poetry of all time. Since then, I have sought its reflection in life and in art. The Bible is like the echo of nature, and I have tried to convey this mystery." - Marc Chagall
Marc Chagall was an artist whose noble and timeless works placed his name at the forefront of the art world, with compositional themes ranging from romantic motifs to Biblical stories.
Under the long-standing influence of religion, in the spring of 1931, Marc Chagall travelled to the Holy Land, an experience that profoundly transformed both his spiritual world and artistic vision. As a result of this journey, a two-volume series was created, titled "Illustrations for the Bible" and "Drawings for the Bible", comprising 41 colour lithographs depicting Biblical stories. These works were printed starting in 1956 on the presses of the Atelier Mourlot workshop in Paris.
The inspiration for these works came not only from his visit to the Holy Land but also from his own childhood in Belarus. In the book "Marc Chagall: The Graphic Works", Chagall’s biographer, Franz Meyer, states: "Chagall's connections with the Bible are truly profound; the forms that populate his (biblical) world are part of his own inner life, part of the living Jewish heritage, and thus are archetypes of a greater, more intense world."
The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Polish gallery Epicentrum Art Gallery, which owns this collection.
