Zigmunds Šņore

Biography

Latvian artist Zigmunds Šņore was born on November 3, 1942, in Rīga, and spent his childhood and youth in Jūrmala. He received his primary education at the Majori Primary School and later studied interior design at the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts. After completing military service, he decided to dedicate himself to the study of visual art and refined his skills under the guidance of artist Ilze Strekavina (1948–2020). He currently lives and works in Rīga.

Artistic style

Šņore’s work is dominated by watercolors, in which he subtly reveals nuances of light and color, creating an atmosphere that is both fragile and vibrant. In addition to watercolor, he also works in applied graphics and oil painting.

The artist mainly works in the landscape genre, creating watercolors with sophisticated colors and nuanced tonal transitions that give his works lightness and depth. Nature and water motifs – the sea, rivers, and yachts – play a special role in his work, which is characterized by spaciousness and an expressive atmosphere. Šņore’s landscapes are marked by a sense of harmony and emotional lyricism. Along with the landscape genre, the artist also turns to social themes, creating figurative compositions that reflect current events.

Šņore first presented his works to the public in 1968 at the exhibition “Latvian Poster” A year later, he gained greater recognition when his works were exhibited at the Jūrmala Museum. He also organized solo exhibitions at the Riga Latvian Society House and at museums in Jūrmala and Madona. The artist’s works are regularly exhibited outside Latvia, including at the Baltic Watercolor Biennial in Kaunas (Lithuania), the International Watercolor Biennial in Fulda (Germany), and the International Watercolor Exhibition in Fabriano (Italy). Šņore’s works are in private collections both in Latvia and abroad.

Interesting Facts

The artist’s family has historical ties to seafaring, which is why the motifs of ships and the sea that frequently appear in his works are also a tribute to and expression of gratitude to his ancestors. Šņore’s grandfather was one of the benefactors of the Ainaži Maritime School, founded in 1864, who responded to Krišjānis Valdemārs’ call to donate funds for the creation of the school.
