In the course of lectures about the Latvian History and Personalities “Personalities. Events. Changes.” this lesson, will be focused on the collapse of the Soviet Union and the restoration of Latvia's independence. It will be a compelling insight into the socio-economic and political situation in the Soviet Union in the second half of the 1980s, which has entered historical literature and popular language as an “era of openness and reconstruction”, highlighting the national movement and changes in the USSR-occupied territory. During the lesson, we will look for answers to the questions: how Latvia regained its independence, what myths, legends are related to this period and, after all, what was the harsh reality, the collapse of Soviet Latvia and the restoration of independent Latvia.
