In the course of lectures about the Latvian History and Personalities “Personalities. Events. Changes.” the sixth lecture will be devoted to the political processes in Europe and the world, often called the Great War, Nation war and the war, which will end all wars, namely the First World War. This will be a story about how the assassination of the crown prince of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand initiated a series of events and resulted in a military conflict in which, thanks to the policies of colonialism and imperialism, the whole world got involved. Oskars Kalpaks, the first commander of the Latvian units of the Latvian National Guard, has been chosen as the central figure or pioneer. The lecture will be an educational journey in the history of Latvia, allowing to get to know and learn about the military history of Latvia and the political and socio-economic developments during the World War I, which unanimously has left a significant impact on the collective memory and oral art of the people.
